A True Hero

Hero has a lot of definition. Through the internet you can get one. One said that it is a man who is endowed with great courage and strength. Another one said that it is a man who possesses braveness. And another one said that it is the main character in a narrative or dramatic work. On whatever the meaning of it, for me there is only definition of it. For me is it is a man or a woman who is brave and not afraid to fall again and again. He never gives up until he gets what he wants and for me it is not necessarily the main character in a story. Like in the Iliad, I consider Achilles as a hero but the more I consider is Hector. For me he is one of the greatest warriors in the story. He is battling and sacrificing his life for his city. Even though   he knows that he is destined to die he still battled on Achilles and he loose and died. For me he is a real hero because he still fought even though he doesn’t have a chance on Achilles and he did it for his city and he even sacrificed his family just for his city. This is a hero for me, when one sacrifices his life for everyone even though that it is hard and when someone do the best that he can in all the things he do.

Chapter Zero

The Iliad is a long novel that was written by Homer and it is about the great Trojan War. The story began with a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the Great Warrior Achilles. They had a quarrel because of Agamemnon’s stubbornness when he first refused to return Chryseis the daughter of the priest Chryses. That’s the time the priest asks help to God Apollo and it was granted and there was like a shower of arrows fell and killed a lot of Achaeans. Then Achilles settled this but when Agamemnon decided to let Chryseis he now gets the lady of Achilles who is Breseis and therefore Achilles got mad to Agamemnon.

For me, I think that this is the event that I will change in the story. Because of what Agamemnon did, Achilles got upset to him. When the Trojan War started Achilles did not join in the battlements early on because of Agamemnon. He is a great warrior that I think both Trojans and Achaeans are scared to battle against him but the Trojans are hopeful in the start of the war because Achilles has not been battling yet. So a lot of Achaeans died in the war and it’s like that the Trojans are already winning the war. If Agamemnon did not insult him I think that he will already be at the war and the Trojans would have fall early. Even though that it is already destined, it will be more helpful for the Achaeans and there will be less number of warriors died on the war if Achilles battled already. I’m pretty sure that the two kings won’t have a quarrel anymore. This war won’t be that long and maybe his best friend Patroclus won’t die anymore. And on the end still the Achaeans won the war and the Trojans fell under them.

Patroclus as a Noble and Geat Comrade

Patroclus is one of the companions of Achilles in the story Iliad or I can say that he is the best friend of Achilles. For me he contributed a lot for the Achaeans. He was the one who is really convincing Achilles to go out and battle against the Trojans until Nestor told an idea that I think was good for the Achaeans but not for him. He borrowed Achilles armor and he pretended as him. He battled against the Trojans and he did it for the Achaeans and for his best friend Achilles. He maybe did some damage on the Trojans but on the end he failed and died. On this part of the story I can say that Patroclus is a noble warrior and friend. For me he gave life for the Achaeans on battling against the Trojans and also maybe to Achilles. He sacrificed his life for his country and for me he did not fail on what he did. He gave the best that he can on battling even though he know that he is hopeless and he did not follow what Achilles said and made his own move. But I can still say that he is very noble and also a great warriors just like Achilles and some of the Achaeans brave warriors.

ACHILLES AND HIS DECISION

Achilles is one the greatest warrior in the story Iliad. Many warriors, I think, are frightened   to battle against him because of his god-given skills in battling. I can say that he is my idol on this story because he is strong and it is very hard to defeat him. But on one part of the story he did not appear on the battlements because Agamemnon insulted him, he is like overacting because of this. The Acheans are already having a hard time on fighting the Trojans, but he is just lying in his tent and it’s like he doesn’t have any care about the war and on what is happening around him. A lot of Achean warriors are already dying and some of their good-battling warriors are already hurt and wounded but again he is still lying in his tent. I think that it is not an appropriate decision and action for a great warrior and a king like him because it is not a good trait for a leader like him to do this kind of thing. He is like a captain abandoning his sinking ship but for a different way he really didn’t do anything on sinking his ship. He is really like overacting and as a king he is not a good leader for me on this situation. As a great warrior he is just wasting his skills and talents that he has. A lot of Acheans are relying on him for his skills and strength on battling but he still doesn’t care about it. He even rejected the gifts that were given to him by Odysseus, through King Agamemnon, for him to join in battling against the Trojans and he said that he just want to return to his homeland which is Phthia. On this part of the story made me think that he is not a good king or a great warrior because of his decisions and actions.
